The incident took place in Middlesex County on Thursday, March 23 in the area of Russell Library in Middletown.
According to Middletown Police, officers responded to the area on a report of an injured woman. When officers arrived on the scene they found a 62-year-old woman who had sustained severe injuries including a fractured skull and a brain bleed.
Video of the attack shows the suspect, later identified as Bryon Bell, age 37, of Middletown, striking, stomping, and kicking the woman before fleeing the area before police arrived, the department said.
Following the attack, patrol officers worked in unison with detectives to identify Bell as the suspect and to disseminate his image.
Officers across all shifts worked tirelessly to locate and arrest Bell to prevent further danger to the community, the department added.
On Friday, March 24, Bell was spotted on Court Street, and after he spotted officers he ran. After a lengthy foot chase, officers located and arrested Bell.
He was charged with:
- Assault on an elderly victim
- Breach of peace
- Reckless endangerment
- Interfering with an officer
Bell was held on a $750,000 surety bond and is currently being held in jail.
